Towing

Initial Towing: Soon after acquisition, the vessel will need to be towed to a dry dock for initial preparation work (see 'Vessel Cleaning').

Towing to Final Port: Once the initial preparation has been concluded in dry dock, if required, the vessel will be towed to its last port prior to being scuttled. Here the ship will be berthed while the final preparations and cleaning processes are carried out (see 'Vessel Cleaning').

Towing to Scuttling Site: With the cleaning of the vessel completed and explosive cutting charged installed the ship will be towed to a location directly over the designated final resting place.

Tugs will be used to orientate the ship, so that it has the appropriate attitude to the prevailing currents. Anchors will be used to fix the vessel in position for scuttling.

The total cost of these three towing operations and final positioning is expected to be in the region of £30,000

Stability During Towing: Computer modelling may be required to satisfy any concerns the insurers may have with regard to vessel stability during the towing and positioning elements of the programme.
